Jung Hye-Sook

Lee Dong-Gwi
Abstract
This study evaluated how materialistic values and social comparison orientation affect depression in high school students, and whether social comparison orientation moderates the relationship between materialistic values and depression. Participants included 422 high school students from Gyeonggi-do, who completed a self-report survey including measures of materialistic values, social comparison orientation, and depression. A correlational analysis was performed, followed by structural equation modeling. The analyses indicated significant, positive relationships between materialistic values and depression, and between social comparison orientation and depression. There was also a significant moderating effect of social comparison orientation on the relationship between materialistic values and depression. As such, students high on materialistic values were more likely to be depressed if they were also high on social comparison orientation. We recommend the implementation of counseling or education programs to lower high school students¡¯ materialistic values and social comparison orientation in order to reduce their risk for depression.
